The world is stupid, but I just watched a squirrel break into a car in the parking lot below me, steal a package of crackers, and escape to a nearby tree. So at least somebody is winning.
In the market for a new pet? Well...Roman politician Lucius Crassus recommends an eel! He was said to have had a pet eel that he decorated w/ earrings (fin-rings?). He loved so much that when it died he arranged for a funeral, and wept bitter tears for his departed eel. 1/2 🗃️🧪

I've had some requests to make this map available as a poster, and so I have! If you'd like to purchase my map of the eels' life cycle, you can get a copy at my etsy store here: etsy.me/3Nvk5jK The print copy looks like this: #eels #maps

2/2: Crassus's eel was hand-fed & came when he called. And his wasn't the only one. Athanaeus wrote that he had seen eels at Chalcis wearing ear-rings & taking food from visitors (mostly offal & green cheese). Scholars have tended to dismiss this as myth, but... www.youtube.com/watch?v=zp7T...
This got unexpectedly popular! We all stan Anjeloma and her antics. Since you're here, though, I'm also gonna try to sell you some maps. Like these subway-style maps for The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, or Narnia that you can get at my etsy store! #LoTR #Narnia #Maps www.etsy.com/shop/Surpris...
Sometimes when you steal eels you get in trouble. Sometimes not! In 1522, John Hyde was caught stealing 2,000 eels (worth 40s!) from John Kite, the Bishop of Carlisle, and Kite generously forgave him. Kite was rebuilding Rose Castle at the time. He could have used the eel-geld! 🗃️🧪

Several years ago, on a whim, I started drawing a map of an eel's life travels as seen by the eel. I figured an eel thinks about its life as a linear journey, rather than a there-and-back again adventure. So I wanted to do a map to reflect this. This morning, on another whim, I finished the map!

www.nytimes.com/2026/03/29/o... This Ezra Klein piece on how the adopters are using— being used by?— LLMs is horrifying. It hardens my resistance to ever turning one of these toys on at the same time that it makes me more sure that I'm going to be completely out of step and behind as a result.
