Yup! This is why alignment on values and going for a ban is the way between teachers and students, the only real way. Anything else implicates either accepting AI or accepting surveillance (same thing at the end of the day). We banned cigarettes. Imagine a world with better values, people. 1/2
Also save energy over squabbles over the referent. In normal speaking everybody knows what AI means. It's the more detailed fake jargon that's super damaging than the ☂️itself. All machine learning, AI, are deeply flawed if used instead of scientific models, theory, etc. bsky.app/profile/oliv...

The only place for LLMs in a classroom is as a cautionary tale right up there with tales of plagiarism, the 'science wars,' and cases of premature claims like the University of Utah cold fusion fiasco. It's a tool, sure. It's not a tool for teaching, learning, or research.

Good, good. Of course it's compression. The hype being so potent it's made people misunderstand the mechanisms is a sad and huge win. Although it's being turned back of course. Which is itself a sign the AI summer will end at least in terms of over promising capacities and disbelieving experts. 🤞🏼

Please see this as a general reminder that you're not alone. Many of us reject, refuse, repudiate artificial intelligence and the technology industry: Guest et al. (2026). Against the Uncritical Adoption of 'AI' Technologies in Academia. Digital Culture & Education doi.org/10.5281/zeno...

As seen in the table below, after about 2010 it became acceptable for the world, including the scientific world, to talk in terms of how things appear (women sure appear to a sexist to be stupid) correlationism, as opposed to caring about looking beyond shallow appearance bsky.app/profile/oliv...

If you're anti AI & making claims that some of the models under the AI umbrella are ok because they seem to be serving scientific goals, then you fell for a type of hype. One from the 2010s; stats models aren't blessed by their use in science and they can erode our thinking. bsky.app/profile/oliv...

If someone has such a breakdown in a collaborative relationship that this is necessary, either their genAI use is blatantly obvious or the lack of trust their collaborator has in them is so disruptive that they may as well go their separate ways.

Finally! 🤩 Our position piece: Against the Uncritical Adoption of 'AI' Technologies in Academia: doi.org/10.5281/zeno... We unpick the tech industry’s marketing, hype, & harm; and we argue for safeguarding higher education, critical thinking, expertise, academic freedom, & scientific integrity. 1/n

Another is: 2️⃣ "numerical point prediction is not something we can nor should expect" from our models at all! Something that I think is completely lost on so many people sadly, especially in modern artificial intelligence hype rhetoric. 5/

As seen in the table & figure above, we dissect and explain how terminology is abused and contorted by industry — terms like 'generative' or 'agentic' are not able to isolate what is being critiqued. We have seen this countless times before; flitting from one nonsense buzzword to another. 2/n

I'm probing an AI image model right now for infringing material, and it's doing things I've never seen before in a way that I think proves the compression argument beyond a shadow of a doubt. I'm honestly gobsmacked.
