Rather than inflict the adverts on myself, I browsed down the Steam “showcase of showcases” and it was full of totally wild, varied, stuff. I haven‘t been short of videogames to play in over a decade, it’s weirding me out now. Are they just browsing the Xbox store? That’s a bit shit, like.
I’ve come across a few laments like this, the Eurogamer one, whatever the fuck YouTube keeps trying to get me to watch, posts passing me by on here and saw some right weird nonsense about Nintendo needing to buck up, the Switch 2 is borrrring or something. And what are they looking at?
But I guess, one constant has been - as long as I can remember - games are not looking to the future. Like, there was a brief respite when everyone was riding off the fad of “look, real humans making videogames and you can know their name” but that lasted ten or twenty minutes really.
Oh. You have a Call Of Duty?? That’s nice. And like, I look at the big showcases and very little has actually really shifted there. It’s still the big money series you know and love and have loved for twenty years now. Games got stuck like this *ages* ago, it’s not new or a sign.
I used to glaze over watching E3 because it was largely more of the same stuff I don’t care about and somebody else does so whatever. I don’t watch showcases because I could be watching a film or something in that time and having a good time instead.
Right, so there’s a whole bunch of videogames that I have absolutely no interest in whatsoever and never will, and in my case it’s generally most of the really big budget output. It’s fine, I just get fidgety. I don’t really get excited about the videogames most people do. Well. Rarely anyway.
The BBC as a broadcaster doesn't make programmes now. BBC Studios is a separate entity. So it needs to commission a production company to make Doctor Who, as Bad Wolf have been doing. Putting it out to tender isn't some kind of abdication of responsibility, it's just... how broadcasting works.
