At this hour 80 years ago, Red Army troops marched into Auschwitz. The Nazis had sent most prisoners on a death march, and tried to destroy evidence of the industrial-scale killing. The few thousand survivors in the camp on Jan. 27, 1945 were those the Nazis just hadn't gotten around to killing yet.
