Woah, the draft feature actually works now?
I've been occasionally playing through a level here and there of the Quake Brutalist Jam 3, and finally out that there was a screenshot button. Love the way this game looks.
I am mildly embarrassed to say that I'm kind of looking forward to the remake, because honestly it does look fun. Definitely a "what if you made Halo today" take on it, for both better and worse. To their credit, there's a lot of changes I do actually like, and many I'm indifferent on.
I always pronounce .tscn as Toscan.
I never really thought about it, but having so little gravity means the tires don't have the "downforce" to grab the terrain under them. "Like driving on ice" doesn't do it justice, but it is also really cool how you can use your thrusters to push the car into the ground to get more grip.
The linked article shares some of my nitpicks, but I'm sure every Halo fan has a massive shopping list by now. To give a sampling of mine: particulars with the Warthog and Pelican, the visual style, the AR being a generic modern assault rifle, sprint, etc. Every one of these is its own rant.
More broadly, Halo CE is the kind of game that a AAAA studio could never make today. It's too weird. Too slow. Too boring. Thankfully the original is (mostly) very well preserved and has aged really well. CE is very unique in the series and my #1 favorite, so I'm always going to picky about it.
One of the regions in Exo Rally Championship you can race is on the moon and it was very surprising how hard 1/6th Earth's gravity makes driving.
For how much of Halo's backstory has been explained and retconned, to the point of draining all the mystique and wonderment from it, it's funny to me that the one line they seemingly won't cross is explaining how the Needler works.
Final Verdict: I like Marathon, but not enough to buy it, and the things that drag it down for me will never change because they are inherent to the kind of game Bungie wants this to be. It's a shame, but not that big of a deal because there's no shortage of great games out there right now.
