5 things you will probably find in most of my books:
- Trans people! Usually going through some stuff
- Creative swearing ("assplow", "turdcano" etc)
- The possible end of the world
- Tortured queer romance
- Oh god, what happened to that guy's head
And in the end... what point does it make? The last episode goes on and on, dragging itself morosely toward a foregone conclusion to tell us... times are bad and we can't trust our neighbours? I think we all noticed, Russell!
Look, the treatment of the trans character, and of trans issues in general, is thoughtless. I hate how she gets the blame for what happens. I hate how the writer never has her push back against the narratives others create for her.
A character in the final episode uses the term "NPC" in a way I've never heard before, to give one unimportant example. But it's redolent of a larger issue. Davies wants to be writing a story about the Way We Are Now, but constantly betrays unfamiliarity with his subject matter.
Though regardless of that I do feel very upset for having watched that, which I suppose was the intended result, so good work I suppose
God you just know he felt so good about that email. It probably made his day to sneer at some lowlife commoner who dared question his MPs right to do whatever the hell they want. Probably came a little when he hit send.
I don't think Davies intended any of this, but there is very much an interpretation you could have of this where it's all about how trans people ruined everything just as the cis gays had it good. Just like there's a weird anti-immigrant streak to it that goes unchallenged.
Join me in celebrating THREE YEARS of Self-ID in New Zealand!
That’s right, for three years trans people have been able to change the sex on their birth cert, with just a declaration.
And despite what the TERFs promised us would happen, NOTHING BAD HAS HAPPENED.
TERFs always lie, never forget.

Okay I finally got through Tip Toe. A deeply uncomfortable watch, only sometimes for the reasons its author intended. You can really tell when RTD is writing about stuff he's personally familiar with and when its something he's heard about in passing and never bothered to research.
