Stefan smiled sadly.
โBut I don't think it's smart of us to keep talking all the time.โ
For a long moment neither of them spoke.
Then Kai nodded painfully.
Stefan reached forward one last time and rested his forehead briefly against Kai's before pressing a soft kiss against his forehead

Kai closed his eyes, basking into the kiss.
โAnd I know you're going to do amazing things.โ

Stefan could practically see the battle happening inside him. The part of him that understood. The part that desperately wished understanding hurt less.
โYou're going to help people,โ Stefan continued. โYou're going to build a career you've wanted forever.โ

Kai immediately shook his head. โNo. I was stupid.โ

The question nearly broke Stefan, because the truthful answer was yes.
It would always be yes.
But Stefan also knew neither of them would move on if they kept reaching for each other every time things became difficult.
โNo one will ever be my best friend except you,โ he admitted quietly.

Stefan reached up and brushed away a tear that had escaped down Kai's cheek. Seeing him cry made every instinct inside him scream to take the words back. To tell him yes. To tell him they'd figure it out. To tell him they could make it work.
But he held it in.

Stefan waited until Kai finally met his eyes again before continuing. โYou were the only one thinking clearly. I kept trying to find some magical solution where neither of us had to sacrifice anything. I wanted the best of both worlds.โ
Kai looked away.

The silence that followed felt endless, but eventually Kai swallowed hard and looked back at him.

This is the end of an era ๐ญ The twins graduated and Kai & Stefan are no more ugh! I'll be back in 2 weeks as I'm taking a break to grind on my last finals, I can't wait to come back because we're finally going to their adult lives ๐
