Stefan smiled sadly.
“But I don't think it's smart of us to keep talking all the time.”
For a long moment neither of them spoke.
Then Kai nodded painfully.
Stefan reached forward one last time and rested his forehead briefly against Kai's before pressing a soft kiss against his forehead

“You were right,” Stefan said softly.
Kai immediately shook his head. “No. I was stupid.”
“You weren't.”
“Stef—”
“You 𝘸𝘦𝘳𝘦𝘯'𝘵.”

This is the end of an era 😭 The twins graduated and Kai & Stefan are no more ugh! I'll be back in 2 weeks as I'm taking a break to grind on my last finals, I can't wait to come back because we're finally going to their adult lives 👀

Kai closed his eyes, basking into the kiss.
“And I know you're going to do amazing things.”

The question nearly broke Stefan, because the truthful answer was yes.
It would always be yes.
But Stefan also knew neither of them would move on if they kept reaching for each other every time things became difficult.
“No one will ever be my best friend except you,” he admitted quietly.

Stefan could practically see the battle happening inside him. The part of him that understood. The part that desperately wished understanding hurt less.
“You're going to help people,” Stefan continued. “You're going to build a career you've wanted forever.”

Stefan waited until Kai finally met his eyes again before continuing. “You were the only one thinking clearly. I kept trying to find some magical solution where neither of us had to sacrifice anything. I wanted the best of both worlds.”
Kai looked away.

Stefan reached up and brushed away a tear that had escaped down Kai's cheek. Seeing him cry made every instinct inside him scream to take the words back. To tell him yes. To tell him they'd figure it out. To tell him they could make it work.
But he held it in.

We let it go together.
“You're going to go put terrible people behind bars while I spend the next few years trying to figure out whether anyone wants to hear my music.”
The silence that followed felt endless, but eventually Kai swallowed hard and looked back at him.
“We'll still be best friends, right?”
