"I have no choice but to be optimistic about the future of Black film. If Hollywood dismisses us, there is always something." Such an insightful interview with @mayascade.bsky.social
From SET IT OFF to GIRL 6 and NAKED ACTS, @judysquirrels.bsky.social breaks down the 30-year legacy of some of the most powerful films about Black women ever made: www.rogerebert.com/black-writer...
trust in a cultural sphere, should it be the primary delegation of engagement, is less about who holds up a mirror to my beliefs and more about being open to the experience of something new.
i believe the demand for *absolute* consensus is for algorithmic sensibility more than human sensibility. taste is precious; art that allows you to believe in the future is as good of a measure as any.
do i need you to feel my favorite film is the best film of all time? no because i already do.

30 YEARS AFTER NAKED ACTS, BRIDGETT M. DAVIS RETURNS TO FILMMAKING WITH HELGA
@bridgettmdavis.bsky.social (director) and i (producer) were interviewed by zac ntim / @deadline.com about helga's recordbreaking crowdfunding campaign coinciding with "naked acts" at 30.
the candor & generosity this storied filmmaking trio showed me during this roundtable for @letterboxd.social is unlike any conversation i’ve ever had.
it adds new depth to the history of cinema to hear what the artists had to say about “making it” as a black director and its aftermath:
as we spend this juneteenth in mediation on black survival and freedom, take some time to meditate on how artistic spirits survive after an industry’s rigid sensibilities crush the dream… kinship and conviction is where hope remains.
