A certain slice of the voting public has such atrocious self preservation instincts they don't think there's any way to recognize a threat to their wellbeing unless it literally self-identifies as such.

This has the makings of a real schism in the Party. Some of us are willing to back most anybody in a fight against Republicans, as long as they are directionally aligned with our politics.
And some of us are willing to back literally anybody as long as they say they are.
