I've put in long hours on research and much more difficult long hours dealing with crises outside of work. I'm glad I did the latter, not sure how much good the former did. And, yes, universities and other employers obviously need to rethink expectations so we can prioritize appropriately.

The terms of the Iran deal emerging in the media make it clear how completely the US lost. But as I wrote months ago that strategic calculus obscures how much devastation and pain Iranians suffered along the way. Everything is so broken.

As a senior scientist, yes, this is true. But "spending time" with family and friends isn't a strong enough way to put it. They need you to defer your work and goals to support them sometimes. You will regret not doing this, more than any missed career goals. You need their support and wisdom, too
