Being in tech, a predominantly White & male industry, is a perfect example imo. The theatre of DEI was at play during the Obama years but it didn’t change much materially for minority workers. Instead women and Black ppl were told they need to do more to be seen, “lean in”.
A lot of DEI work is theatre, & I say this as someone who ran a nonprofit to get Black women in tech (& was successful). The ease of which everything has rolled back is evidence.
There’ll always be a tension btwn the E and capitalism bc capitalism requires workers to not have equity.
