A star sapphire is a sapphire that has been smoothed and polished to a rounded shape, rather than cut into a faceted gem. A flat back is usually added to enhance the effect and aid display.
Visually, the star is on the surface, though the titanium impurities that cause it exist throughout the gem.
Hm. Between the OMF picture last week, the heart the other day, and something I just put in for, I'm slightly worried that Curtana got stuck in my computer somewhere. I need to figure out how to dig her out.

Still the most baffling localization choice I have seen in my entire life. I know people got on localizers for doing some silly things in those days, but this was a weirdly deep cut even for the time.
Miah Curtana's eyes are made of solid sapphire. The asterism effect is useful to let the audience know which way she's looking, as otherwise they would even more uncanny than they already are.

As one of those silly little indulgent gender things, I've been using a custom emoji that @ikksnay.bsky.social made for me a few years back on Discord. Logically, there's no reason for the star to be there; that's a flat face, there's no way for the star to form! But it's cute, so it stays.
