Happy to share our contribution to this new work led by @michalis-averof.bsky.social! @bekeloh.bsky.social and @metteh-thorsager.bsky.social tested membrane tags in the annelid Platynereis dumerilii — many reached the cell membrane, and several also label the developing nervous system in the larvae.

These tools are valuable both as general cell membrane markers for tracking individual cells during development, and as a way to visualise nervous system formation. A great resource for the Platynereis community and beyond! 🧬

Huisken lab is at #EED2026! @metteh-thorsager.bsky.social & @bekeloh.bsky.social will show how we use #Flamingo #light-sheet microscopy to address biological questions in the annelid #Platynereis, with imaging of the developing nervous system as an example (Platy Satellite Meeting & Poster P146).

Finding molecular tags that localise fluorescent proteins to the cell membrane was the goal of our latest paper, now published in Development @dev-journal.bsky.social. The tags act as address labels, sending proteins to the cell membrane, where they highlight the shape and arrangement of cells. 2/9

Summary: Screening a toolkit of diverse membrane-localising tags identifies candidates that efficiently localise proteins to the plasma membrane in a wide range of animals and choanoflagellates.
