This week, tons of schools across the city were denied funding for class size reduction. We should beta test small class sizes, reading books in class, and staffing schools with librarians. Wild seeng the consequences of the left’s lack of a coherent school policy platform playing out here.
Solidarity among teachers across grade levels and institutions is required to resist and push back against policies of distrust. The precariousness of educational labor will worsen without us joining together.
This means, first, dismantling the imagined, artificial barriers that we think divide us.
It's worth considering how profiteers (ed tech, curriculum publishers) and the reactionary right used "disaster capitalism" to strip schools for parts after C-19. McKinsey coined the term "learning loss" just a few weeks into the pandemic, and we haven't recovered since.
Teaching reading in the way suggested here is actually illegal in some states, and, soon, it could be banned at the federal level.
Kaepernick could be helping kids have access to books or providing them meaningful opportunities to write for real audiences.
