The authors are right that historically, especially silver and gold coins were scarce and were, hence, hoarded and less fit as a means of payment. Hence, alternatives were needed. A huge step ahead for economic analysis. Another step has, however, still to be made.

In the words of Hyman Minsky: “Anyone can create money… the problem lies in getting it accepted.” When the seller accepts the payable (a debt to him) a payment has been made. In case of goods, the buyer legally owns them, and a payment has been made. Even if no money existed, before the transaction.
