Fergus Millar, of course, comes close to concluding the Roman Republic should be understood as a democracy, though obviously one must note the substantial pushback on that argument - though it mostly stops short of proposing a 'hard' exclusionary oligarchy (e.g. Mouristen).
Fergus Millar once told me Ted was his brightest pupil. I have fond memories of convincing him to do a reading course with me on Pliny the Elder's Natural History. I learned a ton from him, especially Roman law. Fond farewell teacher and friend.
