Okay since everyone’s crying about the author’s answer to the political question I have a question about the film (Hail Mary?) that’s based on his book: Is it really about Ryan Gosling and a muppet rock working to to turn off the sun? That’s the author you’re freaking out about?

The part that’s so maddening is that people think there’s a one-to-one correlation between the explicit politics of the author and what’s in the work. Faulkner is a great example of someone who articulated sometimes reductive and patronizing views on race and the South

but you find something far more complex in his work. This notion that all art is a symbolic embodiment of some pre-existing and particular theory is stupid and childish. Nolan (whom I love) with his puzzle boxes just exacerbates it.
