I love the symbolism (and real world impact!) of a foundation endowed by a successful 20th century newspaper chain … basically that era’s node-network media model …. investing in a protocol based 21st century social web.

Facebook opened to everyone in September of that year, Google bought YouTube in November, Steve Jobs announced the first iPhone in January 2007. Twitter blew up at SXSW in March and iPhone came out in June, the beginning of the end for the dominant open social web.
This isn’t new territory for us.
In 2019, a @knightcolumbia.org paper by @masnick.com argued that the social web needed open protocols. That idea helped spark Bluesky.
