We use LLMs to troubleshoot and unit test code and QC data and files. I’ve also built some tools with LLMs to automate some of the burdensome admin that professors are saddled with, freeing me up to spend more time with students and on research, the good mission we are dedicated to.
LLMs have added value to our very small, personnel limited university and research lab on an island. we also pay the highest power bills in the country @ $0.44/kwh, so I can relate. But I’m also aware of the underlying issues, just like with my gas car, and clothes from SE Asia. We do our best.
There are genuine critiques about LLMs but these get drowned out in the mass blind rage. Even the original post here was about the problem with talking to AI instead of friends. Daring to suggest one can do both got me called stupid and lectured on data centers. Where did I “champion” LLM?
