The entire right wing methodology for the last 25 years has been to admit "yes, we're corrupt and evil" and then lie "but so are all politicians and at least we're honest about it", and it's successfully conned a bunch of ill-informed people including many who see themselves as moderate or left

The thing which has happened here is that, despite the fact that none of it is legally required (these are above-ground stations, not dangerous tunnels), people who only understand half of the risk-reward trade-off have been given an effective veto on a major project that's none of their business.
The Metro team have done a spectacularly good job of bargaining the fire service down from a $400m project overrun to a $32m one - in a more sensible world the papers would be a) criticising mindless compliance culture b) celebrating the Metro team's $368m win for the taxpayer
