Stop trying to chase a big tent family audience that no longer exists. Aim it at older / smart / bookish / weird kids. Make it feel slightly too old for them (like Stranger Things), not too young for them (like Space Babies).

Alan Cumming and David Morrissey are both so good in this. I feel on edge every second DM's on screen. It's actually quite hard to watch.
