even better advice is "don't put anything into a group chat that you wouldn't feel comfortable printing on the front page of the newspaper regardless of encryption status" — group chats, especially ones with a dozen+ strangers in them, leak all the time, encrypted or not

Look this is great advice if you're saying/organizing/discussing anything that might plausibly be subject to litigation either civil or criminal, but I'd wager 99% of communication for anyone reading this doesn't fall in that bucket so you should enjoy group chats with your friends here if u want.

Chats aren't encrypted, Bluesky will turn them over if subpoenaed.
