at an event today at the Institute of Historical Research: a genuine reminder of how much amazing work is being done on history AND how fortunate we are to have institutions like this+ people whose work sustains them. just in case anyone wanted something to feel good about amidst the general gloom
The learning outcomes of this project are: 1.) Students will learn how to use library databases such as SciFinder and Web of Science. 2.) Students will be able to find, evaluate, and communicate chemical information to a general audience. 3.) Students will learn how to manage a large group project.
The deliverable is a <3 minute unlisted youtube video describing an application of an element. Topics range from the chemistry of handwarmers (Iron), MRI contrast agents (Gd or Mn), Rocky Flats (Pu), etc. We do a screening at the end of the quarter where the students share their videos.
4.) Students will understand basics of copyright as it applies to images and learn to cite and use images with different creative commons licenses. To do this project effectively requires A LOT of scaffolding. Ex: Partnering with the science librarian to teach students how to use library databases
Thanks to everyone who sent in recommendations. I didn't offer any of my own in response, so I thought, given that it is Pride, that I would do so in a thread. And if you haven't sent a rec yet, please do. (1)
Update: both my US and UK publishers are sending cease and desist letters to the company behind the AI version of me, and demanding documentation on what was stolen. I'm lucky to have this support. Not every creative person will. We need better laws in place to prevent exploitation.

The Tribune previously reported that Texas is expected to lose over $3.2 billion in sales tax revenue over the next two years thanks to that sales tax exemption for data centers.

So I wrote a pilot for my first novel, The Survivalists (black lawyer falls in with a group of black brooklynite doomsday preppers) and it’s being performed live on 7/19 at dynasty typewriter in LA. Tickets are at the link.

The tax break is one of the state’s costliest incentive programs and soon to be the most expensive of its kind in the nation.
Texas losing a billion dollars a year on data center tax break
One frustration I have about my work as a prof is there very little reward for good pedagogy (beyond knowing it is the right thing to do and students getting a valuable experience). For example, I teach first-year chemistry and I incorporate an information literacy project in the Spring quarter.
I love this project. It's so valuable for the students! But it is so time consuming. And because information literacy is not an official learning outcome of the general chemistry sequence... this is just something I am doing to enrich the course. It is a ton of work. That I don't have to do.
