1 of my favorite tropes in romance is when a character in a precarious/dependent position meets love interest but separately, gains independence and has a good (enough) time on their own before getting back together for HEA - eg Jane Eyre and The Blue Castle. just realized murderbot does this too
It's so great. She's got her own money, she's got total power after a life of other people trying to overpower her. She's only willing to take him on when she's in charge.

Yeah, that's something I like a lot with Jane Eyre--and that Rochester also fell down a few notches to have the balance of power go the other way for a bit. (Also helped define her choices that St. John's offer had so much death drive in it.)
