I’m looking for a focused, aligned team tomorrow who comes out of the gate trying to win a series. We’ll see.
I was thinking about the message it sends to our team that the O’s might happily engage in retaliation — and to Gunnar that there’s a right way to be intentionally hit at 94 mph — but I didn’t even think about the message this sends to Gibson. Eesh. What an all-around bad response.
OK, a litmus test for this 2026 team:
In 2024, Gunnar was hit by a Yankee pitcher as retaliation for an unintentional Judge HBP. The next day the O’s had their best win of the year, a 17-5 rout in a rubber match against previously untouchable Luis Gil.
What is this team going to do tomorrow?
Rewatching the highlights, besides feeling intense nostalgia for people like Cole Irvin, you also remember how inevitable that team felt in the first half of 2024. They were galvanized and focused. This was their 22 straight divisional series without a loss.

Here’s where I’m at: it’s bad messaging, sure, fine. But also… it’s the kind of messaging that hints at (or even creates) some bad culture stuff. That worries me more.
O’s didn’t retaliate after our player got hit in the head — but the manager sure did get fired up when the opposing team’s bench was chirping.
