Two years on from the UK’s association to Horizon Europe, we are playing our part to boost participation for UK-based researchers
I didn't do a good enough job in crediting the fantastic people behind the four projects we funded, or to pay tribute to the memory of Pablo Suarez (the actual pioneer of circus arts and humour in policy work) - but I hope you enjoy my ramblings
Kudos also to DSIT for investing in this analysis - which is harder to do than you might expect, even without the complexities of the discontinuities. Tracking this is important.
The trajectory is the most important thing here, rather than the snapshot. 2025 has already happened - we just don't have the full stats yet. But the 2026 datapoint is still being written. Full speed ahead for continuing the recovery journey - it has clearly started.

New official statistics just published on the UK's performance in Horizon Europe so far. The graph says it all. A familiar Brexit story - but with light at the end of the tunnel. Decline since the vote to leave in 2016. But the recovery journey has begun.

This is just 2024 data, so the first full year since rejoining the programme. It's rear-view mirror stuff, and no surprise that the bounce back isn't instant. There's a lot further to go, particularly on Pillar 2 and 3. But it shows the effort that has gone into rebuilding the UK's participation
