Archegoniophores: egg-bearing structures on female Marchantia polymorpha plants. They look like tiny green umbrellas that have lost their canopy.
The blobby things below are the Marchantia thallus - the main bit of the plant.

Once in a while I venture out of the Paleozoic to look at younger weird plants... Hermanophyton is a genus based on silicified stems from the Jurassic of the US. It is very likely a gymnosperm but beyond that its affinities are, well, "obscure". #paleobotany #FossilFriday ๐ฟโ๏ธ ๐งต 1/3
We've just described a 5th species ๐ฟ Hermanophyton knollii ๐ฟ from the Aachen Formation in Belgium. This is the first time that Hermanophyton is reported in Europe & in the Cretaceous. ๐

(Review out today, in which we ask whether xylem disconnection arising early in wood anatomy is convergent with disconnection seen across tall plants and whether tree evolution requires disconnection given periodic drought.)
We also describe for the 1st time the secondary phloem of Hermanophyton and we (re) discuss its habit (large liana vs. monocaulous tree) & possible affinities. We... do not actually answer any of the questions - but you were warned in the paper's title! Happy #FossilFriday ๐ฌ๐ฟโ๏ธ 3/3

You teach paleontology in coal country, your collection ends up holding an awful lot of dead wood. Silicified lycopods, Calamites compression fossils, carbonized fronds arm-wavingly assigned to Neuropteris ... and a lot of coal.

A new anatomically preserved species of Keraphyton (Iridopteridales) from the Upper Devonian of Australia
The paper is not online yet but it's too pretty not to show for this #FossilFriday: a new species of Keraphyton from the Late Devonian of Australia, part of the work of
@toinechampreux.bsky.social. Keraphyton is an iridopteridale, an extinct group related to ferns & horsetails. #paleobotany ๐ฟโ๏ธ
