An excellent scheme
Loved this film when I saw it in a real cinema on first release. One scene really did bring a tear to this hard-bitten eye. And that was even before I knew anything of the author. Highly recommended
For #internationalteaday I give you a very rare #suffrageobject - a Scottish Women’s Social and Political Union teaset. ‘Angel of Freedom’ plus thistles in purple, white and green. So simple, so charming -such a clever a piece of propaganda
Born #OTD 1806, #OTD 1867 John Stuart Mill, philosopher & MP, moved an amendment to the Reform Bill to include women - on the same terms as men. A statue is most certainly a #suffrageobject - as you’ll see in my forthcoming The British Women’s Suffrage Movement in 100 Objects - see link in bio
John Stuart Mill, influential philosopher and Liberal MP for Westminster, 1865-1868 was born 220 years ago today. In 1866, Mill presented the first mass petition to the Commons in favour of women's suffrage, as @kathrynrix.bsky.social explores below.
#OTD1913 Emily Wilding Davison went by train to Epsom, returning a few days later - in a coffin. An item carried in her funeral procession is Object 73 in my ‘The British Women’s Suffrage Movement in 100 Objects’ pub by @bloomsburyhist.bsky.social on 23 July. An enticing pre-order price is available

Do you get the message? Just 3 of the 1000s of objects created during the women’’s suffrage campaign. You can read about 100 - and the part they played - in my new book - pub by @bloomsburyhist.bsky.social on 23 July. Pre-order now - link in bio
Suffrage jewellery with provenance is ‘real’ suffrage jewellery. Here are 3 pieces with authentic stories - and memories - attached. I discuss ‘’Suffrage Jewellery’ as Objects 52 in my forthcoming book. Pre-order now - link in bio
A ‘suffrage game’ such as Pank-a-Squith is just one of the 100 objects through which I narrate the history of the British women’s suffrage movement. Look out for my book, to be published by @bloomsburyhist.bsky.social 23 July
SUFFRAGE OBJECTS: ‘VOTES FOR WOMEN’ HOOKS & EYES In over 40 years spent hunting for and selling objects related to the women's suffrage campaign, this little box is the only example I have ever found of 'Votes for Women' Hooks and Eyes. It is a perfect 'suffrage object', hitching to a political…

‘The first humble beginnings of an agitation’: the women’s suffrage petition of 7 June 1866 - The History of Parliament
In over 40 years spent hunting for and selling objects related to the women's suffrage campaign, this little box is the only example I have ever found of 'Votes for Women' Hooks and Eyes. It is a perfect 'suffrage object', hitching to a political slogan a utility that was particularly personal to women. For how else were figure-hugging jackets, skirts or, indeed, corsets to be held together without a generous number of hooks and eyes?

We're working with @ihr.bsky.social and publisher DC Thomson to run a new 'Applied History Fellowships' scheme. We are pleased to announce the appointment of two Fellows this month bit.ly/3RjmSOw Fellowships provide recent PhDs with experience of working, with #history, outside HE #Skystorians 1/2
'Their Finest' is back on BBC2 this evening, at 10pm, adapted by Gaby Chiappe from my book. When I gave my widely-praised 'make-up lady in background' in one scene, I wouldn't have dared to hope that the resulting film would be so well-made and well-loved. Here I am on set, grinning like a loon!
