Yeah......this ain't a great forecast.
Word on the street it will rival the heatwaves of 2009 and 1939.
Some inland parts of Australia will get into the high 40s. The last i checked, some models were Predicting low 50s in some inland places.
Im really nervous about this one.

View from my front yard in #CANBERRA this afternoon.
The fire is 300km away, in Victoria.
Much of Australia is currently in a heatwave, in some places the hottest temps for >15 years.
Cool change forcasted in south-east from tomorrow onwards, but this is a recipe for disaster for firefighting
So devastating 😢

It's 28 degrees at 8.30am in #Canberra. My girls are making the most of outside time while they can. A north-westerly is getting stronger -not good for fire weather. Fingers crossed we see this thru unscathed.
Thinking of everyone affected by the #Victorianfires.

We are 600m above sea level - would be roughly 6deg hotter if we had no elevation.
the @australia.theguardian.com published an oped by me today.
This heatwave is bad.
The bushfires it is enabling are also bad.
Climate scientists & meteorologists are incredibly concerned about the next 48 hours.
And this is just a taste of what's to come.

so I haven't posted here in AGES, but thought I'd sure my recent TEDx talk.
Would do it again in a heart beat!
It's on why net zero is no longer enough, and that adaption is imperative.
Massive shout-out to the ACCESS climate model, which is under grave threat.

"To put it as bluntly as I can, this is serious shit.
If we don't hv an Australian climate model, we are shooting ourselves in the foot when it comes to adapting to climate change."

🚨New paper on heatwaves in a net zero world 🚨
In our study, led by @sarahinscience.bsky.social, we find that the intensity, length and frequency of heatwaves do not return to pre-industrial levels under net zero - and in many regions barely improve at all.

During black summer, my daughters were too young to know what was happening. Now, amid another Australian heatwave, they deserve answers
Australia is the only country with climate modelling focused on the southern hemisphere.
“These cuts will make us suboptimal in core climate science capability in atmospheric and oceanographic modelling, and in understanding the concepts that really drive our weather and climate.”
Exclusive: Science agency is planning to sack a third of the team working on the national climate model, sources say
