It used to be a marker of pride that a fanfic *couldn't* successfully be filed off because the plot/characters/narrative were so intrinsically tied to its source material that the attempt would be confusing and transparent. This is apparently the case! But we just... don't care anymore i guess?

YES. i impulsively offered to file off my notting hill AU a while back for an agent, which is something i'd said for a decade i'd never do on principle, *and* because it's too tied to the canon (Inception), only to immediately change my mind. But *all* the OG fic writers are doing it now π« π
