John Stewart’s wistful look at the boredom of suburbia was a fine folk song; then he offered it to The Monkees, who recorded “Daydream Believer” #OTD in 1967. Davy Jones’ vocals on the soaring chorus made it a No. 1 smash. Kind of like Dylan vs The Byrds on “Tambourine Man,” slick production works

#filmsky One of the most ingenious aspects of Abbott & Costello Meet Frankenstein (out today, 1948) is how it operates as a kind of greatest hits for cinema monsters, reviving Bela Lugosi’s Dracula & Lon Chaney’s wolfman. The early humor is a mask for the final terror inside the old castle; superb!

#filmsky Mel Brooks made fab use of Marty Feldman in his 70s comedies; Marty learned a lot from him as he turned screenwriter/director for The Last Remake Of Beau Geste (out today, 1977), a hilariously vulgar & bad taste comedy of manners. Ann Margret & Peter Ustinov got the joke; giggles galore
#filmsky Just watched: Stalag 17. Only Billy Wilder could juggle the grueling misery of life in a Nazi POW camp with the dark, bawdy humor of how the inmates bond and even dance lovingly together on Christmas Eve. William Holden’s sharp cynicism is a marvel here; Robert Strauss is a riot as Animal.
#filmsky Did Elton revive Disney or did Disney revive Elton? The soundtrack to The Lion King (out today, 1994) gave Elton John two massive hits, both uplifting and a tad cringe-syrupy. “Can You Feel The Love Tonight” was pure Disney fetish - pull out the hanky for a nice Bambi cry. 😿 Ohh Elton …

#filmsky Want to feel paranoid about the two Kennedy assassinations? The Parallax View (out today, 1974) has your ticket! One of the great conspiracy flicks of the 1970s, pretty boy journalist Warren Beatty uncovers an insidious plot following a political murder. Deliciously unnerving thriller.

#filmsky Just watched: Petulia. Richard Lester’s jarring use of flashbacks and a complex narrative structure add sharp depth to this sad tale of a socialite (Julie Christie) in an abusive marriage; the downbeat ending is a rough gut punch. Bolstered by fine support by Shirley Knight & Joseph Cotten.

Ah, summertime. Both the heat and gas prices are rising fast here in Orlando, making us all a bit lazy. But not too lazy to avoid hitting the comic book shop where I found a fab 1973 issue of The Phantom Stranger (so eerie) or the liquid store for some fine Chardonnay. Happy Saturday, one and all!
