The stillness of the scene contrasts strongly with the jaunty flags hanging from the restaurant. His response to the work of the Impressionists is evident in the short, straw-like strokes of paint and bright colour.

Dutch Post-Impressionist painter Vincent van Gogh was born on this day in 1853 in Zandert, The Netherlands.
A year after he had moved to Paris, Van Gogh painted this view featuring the popular Restaurant de la Sirène at Asnières.
The suburb of Asnières on the Seine was popular with artists, and Van Gogh made three paintings of this restaurant in the summer of 1887. This view was taken from the riverside, probably early in the morning.

Designed to look like books, these ceramic objects are actually flasks or hand warmers.
They are thought to have been filled with hot water or coal to warm the hands of the wearer on a cold winter's day. They functioned as a sort of ceramic hot water bottle. The perfect gift for book lovers!
This project is supported by a grant from British Council Bangladesh, with additional support from Seher and Taimur Hassan, the Samdani Art Foundation, and the Ashmolean Patrons.

In her paintings and drawings, capturing urgent global and environmental issues, Surovi critiques the link between natural disasters and social inequalities. Works on display include a 30ft-long scroll and an ephemeral drawing, which the artist has completed across the gallery’s walls.

This red-figure pottery cup attributed to the Euergides Painter shows a pup scratching away with a hindleg. The dog depicted here is likely a Laconian hound, which were the usual hunting dogs used in Greece.
