The Temple of Flora was so ambitious it bankrupted its maker. Created by Robert J. Thornton between 1799 and 1807, it is considered one of the grandest flower books. This incredible book was realised by a team of artists, working across a range of techniques.

She faced multiple charges, including witchcraft, heresy and dressing like a man. After a year in captivity she was found guilty and burned at the stake at the age of 19. Over the centuries since her death, she has inspired numerous works of art and literature such as this drawing by Merson.

This chalk and ink drawing by Luc-Olivier Merson titled, ‘The entry of Joan of Arc into Orléans’, is a study for an illustration in the ‘Missel de Jeanne d’Arc’ published in 1896. It is one of twenty illustrations by Merson for the publication.
Joan of Arc (c.1412–1431) was a national heroine of France, a peasant girl who acted on what she believed to be divine guidance and led the French army to a momentous victory against the English at Orléans. Captured a year later, Joan was tried by the English and their French collaborators.
This impressive object was carved from lapis lazuli and wrapped in gold ✨✨ This ornately decorated ewer was made during the European Renaissance. It is carved from two pieces of precious Lapis Lazuli wrapped in lavish gold in the form of a triton, with a horn and split fish-tails.
