The NBA making the Nets pay the Knicks $4.8 million for violating the Knicks' territorial rights on Long Island when they entered the NBA was pretty harsh. The Nets then having to pay the Knicks ANOTHER $4 million to move from Uniondale, NY to New Jersey was downright dirty.

That was probably the case in the 70s but I doubt much of that fan based survived the move to New Jersey and quarter century of consistent sub-mediocrity. Having to sell Dr. J. to the Sixers to finance their expansion fee was an absolute disaster.
