Mind you, I was very lucky to work with a lot of folks on the Angel comics. I don't think I've ever laughed OR cried as much as I did reading @brianmichaellynch.bsky.social Spike scripts.
Doing the Hellmouth con yesterday was a very fun and timely reminder to me of why I love those stories and why they matter to me. I hadn't forgotten, exactly, but it was such an intense year or so of working on the Angel comics & I took a kind of long break from that world after.
And a good part of the reason Denethor is Like This is 1. he wasn't King and resented it 2. He thought he could handle the Palantir and instead was twisted by Sauron's propaganda.
And I mean, if you don't want to evolve as a person then ok but that's not the audiences fault/problem. The world moves on. Hopefully for the better (not always but hopefully) and you either make the effort to move with it or, I guess, stagnate and get cranky for no reason.
I personally don't think it's always a bad thing that a show that was relevant awhile ago is less relevant now. Sometimes things are of their time and that's not good or bad, just how it goes. Although most of the time I see that being said it's because someone thinks being an asshole is "edgy".

So often this "too woke today" lament is made by middle age straight guys who are cranky that whatever they thought of as their edgy era either never really was and/or isn't received the same way today.

It's been quite a lot of years since I co-wrote Illyria: Haunted for IDW during an extremely weird era in the timeline of the Buffy & Angelverse comics. It meant a lot to me at the time and it's very sweet that people still remember it every so often.
