US Administration Weaponizes ESTA for World Cup, Rodman and Kang Make Times100, USWNT Triumph/Survive in Brazil Friendly, and More: Wednesday Freedom Kicks
That's our girl!
In 2024, Herrera was named an MLS All-Star and I really thought he was gonna be a corner stone of the team for awhile
To go from that to his quality of play tanking, being named in the Jeffrey Dewsnup abuse lawsuit and waived today, what a downfall

We do like to keep it a bit breezy around here, we enjoy the sport, and the sport, while compelling and emotionally impactful at times, is supposed to be fun. There is, however, a reality I'm going to address today. And that's the way this World Cup has been managed before a tournament ball even has been kicked. Let's use this as the jumping off point:
Happy Friday! Today we're obsessing about the USMNT World Cup Opener, Trinity Rodman's comments about DC, and international players enjoying their time in the US.
The Men's World Cup is finally here. Mexico and South Africa get things started this afternoon. There are are a ton of interesting story lines. On top of there are still local items of interest, including DCU parting ways with Herrera. All that and more in Thursday Freedom Kicks.

Happy Friday, and happy World Cup! It's finally here! I am working on this very article while watching a game! I can hardly believe it. Happy Thursday everyone. For better or worse, the moment is finally here. The Men's World Cup, the first with games on US soil in three decades kicks off today. I don't remember the 1994 World Cup that well, but definitely felt its impact. For many years I had a poster of the '94 team on my wall. The interest in Soccer that tournament created for me survived the USMNT's ignominious 1998 tournament run.
The world cup opening match may have been played already. That's all well and good. For the USMNT and the nation hosting the lion share of the World Cup fixtures, including the final... the tournament dawns after the sun sets on the East Coast. The US play their opening group stage match tonight. Their opponent, Paraguay, will look to spoil the experience, and, despite losing to the US narrowly in a friendly staged last November, the South American stalwarts are capable of that.
