My response is below, but don't feel that you need to draft anything nearly so long-winded. A short statement will also be very helpful.
This is bad. Bad for researchers. Bad for science. Bad for universities. Bad for professional associations.
For example:
1. Every award would be vetted by political appointees, who could overrule peer reviewers and deny the award if it doesn't advance the president's priorities. 1/🧵
My daughter took the stage to give a TEDx talk on deforestation. She didn't just highlight the problem, but shared real, actionable steps we can all take to protect natural forests.

Obviously a proud dad moment, but she actually got inspired at school

Of all the harm this administration has done to US science, today's proposed changes to the way federal grants are awarded and administered is the most damaging yet.
The text of the federal register document is impenetrably tedious by design, so here's an excellent summary of what it says.

The successful candidate will be hired at the Department of Forestry and Environmental Resources at NCSU as soon as possible and explore the influence of climate variability on mountainous forests using available (unpublished) observational data, advanced modeling, and quantitative analytics.
This position is part of the DOE-funded Watershed Function Science Focus Area (watershed.lbl.gov), which investigates how mountainous watershed functions respond and adapt in the face of increasingly warmer and drier conditions.
