The faculty I work in has quadrupled its "Quality-Related" annual income from government through the last 3 RAE/REF cycles.
The Russell Group & the rest of the pre-92s are itching to stamp out the evidence that we're just as good as them. Itching.

The danger here is less that only 22 universities are allowed in the REF and more that we end up with a 'sensible compromise' of 50.
