...Immersion Corp used to do this cultural work, but they basically fired everyone around 2020, with a bunch of smaller scale operations trying to fill that space (and doing a better job of it in a lot of ways).

Microsoft just published developer guidelines for implementing haptics in Windows 11 and wow this is a bit of a goldmine. A big challenge continues to be standardization--of playback hardware, haptic languages, and design practices... microsoft.design/articles/a-t...
Playback devices rn are limited to haptic trackpads (and not a ton of Windows laptops have those) and the Logitech MX Master 4, which has a tiny little haptic display surface in the thumb area, but they have plans to push more compatible devices in the fall product release cycle.
