I supported the original conception of this as a new PI and support it now as mid-career faculty. The status quo means diminishing taxpayer returns, wasted labor in grant writing, and undergirding the soft money system. Three seems a fair number to spread bets and leave room for collaboration.

How did we arrive at weak pushback against heinous war crimes? Because our media treats war like sport. Instead of questioning the legality of a war sold on false pretenses, we get critiques of strategy and timing. These are matters of International Humanitarian Law and Nuremberg, not gas prices.
In agreement that there are potentially better implementations of this idea focused on effort and total funds, but the general principle is correct.
My lab is cautiously ok on funding, but everyone in this system knows that a different sorting of reviewers can tilt a lab between bankruptcy and relative wealth. A system that spreads risk beyond a baseline is just acknowledging some of the limits of our predictive power and conception of merit.
