I supported the original conception of this as a new PI and support it now as mid-career faculty. The status quo means diminishing taxpayer returns, wasted labor in grant writing, and undergirding the soft money system. Three seems a fair number to spread bets and leave room for collaboration.
I really hope this set ends with Bon Iver as Bob Dylan covering Bon Iver.
My lab is cautiously ok on funding, but everyone in this system knows that a different sorting of reviewers can tilt a lab between bankruptcy and relative wealth. A system that spreads risk beyond a baseline is just acknowledging some of the limits of our predictive power and conception of merit.
