What's driving this? Hint: it's not renewables integration costs. In a different paper with Brown & Eckert we found ~3/4 of the 2021-23 price increase came from a temporary boost in market power. This shows up in the energy component. As of 2024, that's gone and system costs are at 2018-20 levels.

CD Howe has a new paper out comparing power prices across Canada, updating one I co-wrote in 2018. They include this chart of renewables vs system cost. I fear it may get unfairly weaponized solely based on using 2023 data for AB. Fast forward to 2024 or 25 and it looks very different! 1/3
