The Radicalism of the American Revolution was the first book I read in graduate school. It made me so mad I considered dropping out, mostly because of the way he downplayed the contradiction of slavery. I've come to appreciate Wood's scholarship over time, even as I continued to disagree.

I’m rarely at a loss for words but today I don’t have many for the enormity and the complexity of Gordon Wood’s legacy - I was inspired by his work even as I agreed with about 1/2 and was often irritated by the rest. RIP. A real one. www.brown.edu/news/2026-06...
