You want to write your novels so that people can't put them down. Focusing on adding a lot of details to re-explain things is the wrong way to go.

I think one of the draw backs of beta reading on sites like ScriboPhile is that people don't tend to read the works all the way through, so they forget stuff that has happened and question it later on... Usually when I read things I will read them all the way through in one or two days...
James Herbert, though is stuff is a little strong for most people. His stuff can get very graphic. Especially The Rats Trilogy. I don't know if he is considered underrated but he does not get as much love as King and the rest of them.
