James Herbert, though is stuff is a little strong for most people. His stuff can get very graphic. Especially The Rats Trilogy. I don't know if he is considered underrated but he does not get as much love as King and the rest of them.
Definitely Poe, but only if he came back as annoying Raven and had to tap everything out in morose code.

So Orphan's Brood, one of the characters is Winnie-The-Booh a large musclely-plushed bear who likes to spew white-hot honey and eat monster meat. He used to live with his friends in the Haunted Acre Woods but has been summoned across space and time to help his new friend Richie.
