As the little boy sat there amongst the happy crowd, the Smiling Man hissed his annual congratulations.
“Another year gone, Johnny,” he said, invisible to all except the small child, “22 left to go.”
With that, the Smiling Man slipped back into the shadows, until next year.

Having seen it first, the child smiled & waved towards the shadows. “Hi, Mama!”
The child’s father froze, his blood chilling. He turned, recognized a fragment of hair color and the wedding band on a crooked finger, but it *couldn’t* be.
She’d been dead 3 years. He made sure of it.
