Having seen it first, the child smiled & waved towards the shadows. “Hi, Mama!”
The child’s father froze, his blood chilling. He turned, recognized a fragment of hair color and the wedding band on a crooked finger, but it *couldn’t* be.
She’d been dead 3 years. He made sure of it.

As the little boy sat there amongst the happy crowd, the Smiling Man hissed his annual congratulations.
“Another year gone, Johnny,” he said, invisible to all except the small child, “22 left to go.”
With that, the Smiling Man slipped back into the shadows, until next year.
The shape smiled, all of it, stars shining through its shadow, an echo of teeth there, and a voice made of a thousand nails scraping a thousand chalkboards rasped, "Thank you." #horrorwriterschat
…like the candle flame, the shape flickered, mutating and changing, appearing like a face, a claw, and a large dark eye before settling into a long, ragged, scarecrow-like form, with a bright white smile. Quickly, she blew out the candles, praying her promised wish might save her. #HorrorWritersChat

A candle reignites and eyes glow.

Another alights, and teeth that vibrate in blackened gums smile wide.
#HorrorWritersChat start of book, Elsie would probably get me something very trendy but boring and bland. By the end of the book, Elsie is more into burning everything down. So, maybe she'd get me a flame thrower, just in case my own rock collection ever gets out of hand.
