Even if Fried never pitched again (exceedingly unlikely), he’s been paid ~32.5 mil per WAR he’s had with the Yanks. These O’s one year deals, using a 1.2 ROS projection for Bassitt on FG (generous), have been paid ~31.4 mil per WAR. And Fried still has 6 more years left to keep playing!
Ehhh… even if he goes down for a year, they’re still getting value over the life of the deal. The O’s have spent a quarter of Max Fried’s 8-year, $218M contract on one year of Zach Eflin ($10M), Charlie Morton ($15M), Tomoyuki Sugano ($13M), and Chris Bassitt ($18.5M).

Meanwhile Fried is about to get TJ. Or not. But the worst case scenario is definitely in play.
Just saying I’m starting to get why they’re skittish on these huge years/money deals with SPs. Do you really think a guy is gonna start for you for 6-8 years, and be good and healthy for all 6-8?

.@ScottBraun on Orioles rotation: "Despite some ugly looking ERAs, it's better than last yr...Rogers is at least a #3 starter stuff-wise. Baz has a floor, will be a really good pitcher. Sure, they should have gone after Max Fried 2 yrs ago. Or even Framber Valdez + Ranger Suarez."
