Hello! 👋 I'm hoping to raise money for two Bay Area cat rescues. If you post a screenshot of you donating at least $20, I will answer a style-related question for you. But first, let me tell you about the rescues, why they're worthy of your support, and hopefully get you to adopt a cat. 🧵
I’m getting really emotional at some of the notes people are posting, especially “I didn’t know I was one of so many” ICE thought we’d split up, run, hide. They didn’t think there would be so many, either

Early feedback helps us make our legislative priorities! The work of the GA may happen officially in January, but members shape the legislation they introduce in the fall. Chime in now!!!
UFLI is the gold standard!
Please be careful when sharing this. It’s an important expose, but people tend to think that it means phonics are some kind of magic solution, and they’re not. A significant percentage of students *do* learn to read via balanced literacy methods; there are other factors feeding the overall decline.
Anyway, teaching a young person to read (if you don’t narrowly mean decoding words) is exceptionally hard. Please don’t believe anyone who tells you otherwise. Something is going on; structured literacy/phonics is key to the solution, but it’s not a silver bullet.
Traditionally, teaching close reading has felt harder than glossing for the “big picture.” You need to understand the small stuff well enough to sweat the small stuff. But of course, without the contextual framing of the larger work, it’s almost impossible to it.
I’m sorry, but that’s not true. There’s attention and focus required to close read a short section of text that is *also* a skill that must be acquired. Stamina and the ability to synthesize chapters and books via patterns and facility with structure is a different (though overlapping) skill.
